Imitation by Heather Hildenbrand Tour Stop

Everyone is exactly like me. There is no one like me.

Ven wrestles with these contradicting truths every day. A clone of wealthy eighteen-year-old Raven Rogen, Ven knows everything about the girl she was created to serve: the clothes she wears, the boys she loves, the friends she loves to hate. Yet she’s never met the Authentic Raven face-to-face.

Imitations like Ven only get to leave the lab when they’re needed—to replace a dead Authentic, donate an organ, or complete a specific mission. And Raven has never needed Ven . . . until now.
When there is an attack on Raven’s life, Ven is thrust into the real world, posing as Raven to draw out the people who tried to harm her. But as Ven dives deeper into Raven’s world, she begins to question everything she was ever told. She exists for Raven, but is she prepared to sacrifice herself for a girl she’s never met?

What can I possibly say about Heather Hildenbrand that yall don’t already know? Just when I think she can’t possibly top her latest book, she goes and proves me wrong. The last book I read from Heather was DreamKiller and I absolutely loved that one, if you haven’t read it yet be sure to pick it up and read it. So when I saw the cover and read the synopsis to Imitation, I knew immediately it was going to be an amazing book. I mean afterall look who its by, right?
“Everyone is exactly like me. There is no one like me. I wrestle with these contradicting truths most nights  while the rest of the sleep.”

First three lines of the book had me instantly hooked. Why you ask? Well lets dissect it from my point of view for a moment. Heather writes “Everyone is exactly like me” what could that mean? Well that’s the tricky part right? If everyone is like you they either A) have to be you B) or be the same type of you. Confused? Don’t be it’ll make sense later. “There is no one like me” obviously means the person is unique. No two people are created the same, or are they? Which brings us to the last sentence of the two statements contradicting themselves. How can everyone be the same but not? Got you spinning yet? I can honestly say I loved this. It made me think, it made me curious to see what this character was talking about being the same yet different. But isn't that how we are now? We are all human so that makes us the same but we all have our own traits, our own personalities so that makes us different. Unique. That is unless you’re a twin, then you look the same and may even act the same, but there is always something a small part of you that will make you different. Unique, the contradiction of being the same yet different. Mind blown, definitely!

Ven is the female MC in imitation. Everything is told from her and lets just say that I don’t envy her at all. I mean Twig City doesn't sound like a place I would love very much, but then living up to what she was created for doesn't sound to appealing either. Well not at first anyways. It starts with a letter from Marla. The letter is like a death sentence, why, well because it means you leave Twig City and never return. Where do you go, what do you do, what exactly are you? It all lies within the title. You’re an imitation. When ‘duty’ calls you have no choice but to comply and that’s what happens to Ven. Duty called but the plus side of her duty detail includes the very handsome body guard Linc. Can I just say that I wouldn't mind being in her shoes so much when hes around.
Secrets. So many secrets. Will Ven gain what she truly wants? Does Ven and Linc become more than what they are? Does Linc find out the biggest secret Ven is keeping from him? And what’s happening to the other like Ven? What’s going to be Ven’s role it all of it and is Linc going to stand by her and help her?

“Joy, bigger than anything I’ve ever experienced, surges into my chest. It is a feeling so solid, it seems touchable. If this is what it’s like to be human… and then I realize—this is what it’s like to be me.”

This book is definitely a series so when you reach the end don’t be surprised, well go ahead and be surprised because well  it’s going to leave you craving the next book. I know I am. I can’t wait to see what happens with Ven and Linc.

One of the things that truly stuck with me is the fact that for some strange reason, this book almost holds a truth to it. The extreme possibility that this could very well be going on right now and we don’t even know it makes it that much more intriguing. Heather Hildenbrand, you definitely have out done yourself once again. I cannot wait for the next book to this amazing series and I’m absolutely in love with Linc. He’s truly amazing.

What would it feel like to be a copy of someone, to have your life's purpose only to be that. When you are done you are disposed of. That's what it feels like to be an imitation, which is what Ven is.  Ven is called up to fulfill her purpose in the world.  She is needed to step In place.  She's never been outside in the real world, learned manners, nice clothes or ridden in cars.  When she arrives at her new home she's greeted by her "father". Wow what a jerk Titus Rogen is.  Seriously Heather Hildenbrand made a character I hate. He's one mean dude!! Bring in Linc, Ven or uhhh Raven's bodyguard. Right away I could tell Linc liked her, but really didn't care for the real Raven.
Ven's job was to go charity events and play the part of Raven, and help find who was trying to kill the real Raven.  Titus didn't care if she died... That's what she was for. Sigh. Along the way Linc notices she's not really Raven.... But she keeps up the lie. She starts to fall for him but doesn't think an imitation can. Through all this , Ven finds there is a plot to take her, kill her, and the know she's an imitation. Who's behind it? And who also are imitations put in place?  There is also some imitations on the outside who want to break out in their own and have removed their tracking devices. What does this mean for Ven? Can she have that life??
I must say this book blew me away. I loved the mystery around every turn. I was kept on my toes the entire time. I absolutely loved Linc! Seriously go out and get Imitation, Heather Hildenbrand created a story that brings you in and captivates your mind! I can't wait for book 2  like now!

Excerpt

Finding Dad and Sophie’s graves, I shift back to my human form and slip the elastic belt loose to release my shorts. I put them on and walk between the stones to sit right in front of Dad’s headstone. Seeing his name, Curtis James Williams, I nearly lose myself. I break my stillness by wiping away some dirt from the face of the stone.
“Hey, Dad,” I whisper. Taking a seat in the grass, I begin pulling weeds, my usual routine. “Things have been…well, pretty insane.”
I think back over the last few weeks since the last time I visited. Between finals in school, working out, pack duties, learning things of this world that I never knew possible, fighting and not fighting with Skeeter, things have been intense and nonstop crazy.
“Football will start in August. I don’t think I’m doing the playbook boot camp again this year. I know it’s important, but I’ve got a lot on my plate now. I won’t give up football,” I promise my dad.
With a hard swallow, I decide to move into updating him on the family. “Mom is trying to be Mom,” I say, yanking a weed from in front of his headstone. “She’s okay, I think. I know it’s harder on her than she lets on, but she’s trying to live for us, which is more than she did a few months ago. She has days where the tears just won’t stop, but they’re not as constant now. She seems angrier than usual.” I wince as memories zoom around me. Mom got angry at me for throwing my wet towel in the hamper, ripped into Leland over a brand of peanut butter he bought, and has been suspicious of Jaz and Seth for no reason. I’d rather not rehash all that again, so I continue on with the family updates.
“Alex is talking more. Sometimes we can understand him. He just started calling me Heywe the other day,” I say proudly. Alex is Leland’s son and is a little over a year old. He only says “dada” and “Heywe.” Mom and Jaz were a bit upset about that and are still trying to teach him new words.
“He’s getting a lot better with walking, too. He’s not tottering as much and doesn’t need help all the time. Mom fusses when he falls down, but I know she’s enjoying watching him walk and try to reach different milestones. Leland had to baby proof the living room and kitchen, too, because Alex thought his gold fish crackers belonged in the VCR and DVD player. That was a mess. Leland just tossed it after attempting to shake out all the crackers.” I snort.
I don’t tell him about the time Alex put his teddy in the cabinet next to the oven. None of us could find it and he had no way of letting us know where it was, even if he could remember. I can laugh now, but that was a rough two days. He screamed almost non-stop for that thing. Jazzy finally found it when she went to make waffles, and he conked out as soon as he got his little hands on it. Dad had picked out that teddy bear just for Alex the day Psycho Sammy, Leland’s ex, dropped him off, calling him freak spawn. That teddy is Alex’s best friend now.
I grab a few more weeds and pile them off to the side. It’s not many, and the landscapers usually get them all, but they don’t come out often.

REVIEWS :

Soul Promise is book 2 in Rachel Walter’s soul mate series.  If you haven’t read True Connection yet, start there.  I was excited to see Henry get his story and he does in this book, and much more.  Henry is trying to figure out himself and his wolf and what he is to others.  All this and fighting the pull he has for Skeeter.  Now, I want to slap them BOTH in this book.  It was like QUIT FIGHTING IT.  But they are also fighting against a force that wants to tear their group apart.  Jazzy, Seth, and Barry are all there to help Henry through his tough time, even when he pushes them away.  There are so many characters in this book, but I am weird I like my core group and what they are into.  Henry had so much going against him, even himself.  But he figured out that he should count on his friends to be there to help him through anything. There is a battle, I wont tell you about it but……. friends are lost.  I cried. Get your tissues ready.  I will say this is a VERY heavy book.  Not just in size, but in emotion.  Rachel does leave it open for all the characters to get something in the next book.  Me?  I want a Barry book.  Then I will be thrilled. HAHAHA.  Go Fall in love with all these friends.  You feel like part of their lives by the time you are through.

One of the perks of being friends with an author is you generally get teasers from the story before its finished. You also get to beta read for them too, which is AWESOME. I knew before I read Soul Promise that it was going to be deep and emotional, I wasn’t wrong, but it also had a comedic relief that balanced everything. That’s what I love most about this book, this series, and this author. Rachel Walter writes in a way that can have you laughing one minute, crying the next, and back to laughing again. It’s truly amazing.
Soul Promise is told from Henry’s POV, if you’ve read True Connection, you’ll know that Henry is Jazzy’s brother. I definitely recommend you reading it first because it gives back ground information on the world the author has created. You could probably get away with just reading Soul Promise, but you won’t grasps the significance of certain events fully. With that being said, I hate spoilers, so if you haven’t read TC I would stop reading this review.
So Henry is this amazing character who cares deeply about everyone in his life, when Jazzy was threatened in TC, he found out he wasn’t a normal human. His biological father was a shifter, not to mention a murder as well, but that left Henry’s wolf side unknown until his family was in danger. After his first shift he began receiving messages that only he could hear… he thought it was his human half fighting with his wolf. Nothing is that easy, but it represents something we all go through in our life. It’s figuring out who we are when something significant happens. Something so life altering that you find two pieces of yourself at odds with the other. The old you fighting with the new you, who wins? Is there ever really a winner?
Then he’s confused about Delilah… you know Skeeter, Jazzy’s best friend? Well he’s feeling things that he can’t express, on top of everything else that’s going on, he begins to pull away. It hurts everyone. Rachel writes in a way that has you pulling similarities in your own life, well at least for me it does. Think back on your life, on friends and family…did you ever have that one person that held the group together? Well that’s Henry in a way, but Rachel has a better way of saying it.
So what happens? More than I can say, but know this book had me on the edge of my seat. It takes a little while to pick up momentum but once it does, you’ll be saying WTH just happened. It had me laughing throughout the entire book. The love and bonds between the characters are uniquely refreshing, Henry and Barry’s interaction’s are hilarious. But with the happy comes the sad. There are a few chapters that had me in tears. I have to say I wasn’t real happy with a few scenes that took place, and though I knew about them before reading them, it still punched me in the gut.
What it all comes down to is that Henry finds his soul mate with Skeeter, and its through their bond that he’s able to make it through some pretty tough spots. There’s so much packed into this series that I can’t wait to see what the author comes up with next. The paranormal aspects are top notch, not to mention the variations of shifters, and characters that beg you for each one of them to have their own story, you won’t be disappointed. If you love YA and the Paranormal, The Soul Mate Series by Rachel Walter is definitely for you.

It’s not often I find myself reading a book that clutches at my heart. Not saying the books I’ve read lately have been sucky, it’s the opposite actually, but Almost by Anne Eliot is the book to be toped for me this year. I wish I could say I discovered this gem on my own, but that would be a lie. I owe this awesome find to the new CBC co-blogger, Heather. She’s had the pleasure of meeting up with Anne and getting me a signed copy of Almost. Heather has been telling me since last year I needed to read this book and I have it on my kindle but never got around to reading it. When me and Heather met up at UTopYA Con last summer she handed me copies of Anne’s books and they have been staring at me, calling my name, but life got in the way.

First thing I want to point out about this book is its written in dual POVs. You all know how I love and I mean LOVE dual POVs, I was really excited to dive in. I’ve heard nothing but good things from two people I trust explicitly when it comes to books, so I was giddy. I also would like to stake claims on Gray, Heather was right when she said I would fall in love with this guy. Completely in total love with this guy and is at the top of my book boyfriend list.

We start off with Jess and from the beginning you can see that something happened to her. She’s not sleeping and feels like she has to constantly wear a mask, but why? Well from the synopsis you can tell that her trauma stems for an almost rape at a party 3 years ago. Let me pause here for a minute because some of you might be shying away with this news, but I implore you to stop and wait. One of the beautiful things about writing is that you can write about what calls to you, even if most people would deem it a taboo subject. Something that should be off limits, something like rape is controversial. We all have our own opinions, but despite what they are, I ask you to take a chance and read this book. Open your mind and get lost in this beautiful story despite the topic, because it is truly beautiful and flawless. So Jess is trying to be ‘normal’ whatever that is, so she can move on, and go off to college when the time comes. Normal is overrated, besides what is normal anyways? With an internship at a company she loves is the start of appearing normal, but that is shaken when a boy with golden-green eyes wakes her from the nap she was taking in the car.

Gray has his own secretes. He’s far from innocent but one thing is for certain, the crush he thought would disappear never did. When he sees Jess asleep in the car he wakes her so she won’t be late for the interview they both are there for.  When he finds the list her sister made about being normal, things change for the both of them. I love Gray. I love Anne for the way she presented Gray to me. I felt his struggles throughout this entire book and though I hated that he hid his secrete for so long, I was constantly rooting for him. So one of the things on Jess’ list was to get a boyfriend. When she offers him a deal of a life time to get the money he needs for college, he’s hesitant at first, but caves. It can’t be that bad to play the pretend boyfriend just for the summer right?

It was amazing to watch their story unfold. Jess trying to fight her attraction to Gray but failing miserably. Gray at war with himself for feeling the way he does knowing he holds a secret that can tear them apart. Let the fake boyfriend experiment begin. It was hard for Jess to trust Gray but she manages, doing so, starts falling in love with Gray. Nightmares plague her and they are only getting worse. Each night she remembers more, but the blending of reality and fake is getting blurry. She starts hearing Gray’s voice in her nightmares… but that can’t be right. She’s just confusing what’s not real with what is right?

I was glued to this book and the few hours I had to pause to get things together for my kids, KILLED me. I needed to get back to reading asap. I needed to know what happened. When the big reveal happened, because you know its coming, I cried right alongside with Jess. I knew the secret obviously but the emotion it tore for Jess broke me. So what’s the secret Jess discovered by reliving the most tragic night of her life? Can she put things into perspective and forgive Gray? But most importantly can Jess move past that night and start living her life?

Anne Eliot wrote an utterly beautiful book about an even in a girl’s life that happens around us and did it a way that shines awareness with a beautiful love story. Sometimes we have to forgive ourselves if we truly want to move on from traumatic experiences. I absolutely adore Gray and Jess and would love to see something more from them, maybe a novella? You have to pick this book up and read it, you won’t be disappointed.
Dani, Heather and Rachel told me I needed to read Almost.  I said ok I am game.  if three friends loved it I will too.  Well JUST having finished it I did!  Now, I was frustrated with Jess, one of the main characters in this book.  But once you hear what she went through it helps to understand.  See Jess was ALMOST Raped at a party.  Between what was slipped in her drink and the stress she doesn't  remember much.  But it has left her shattered.  She hides in her room, is antisocial and when at school she puts on a brusk attitude.  Gray is the other main character.  He is the one that help save Jess, but she doesn't remember.  Her parents even ask him to stay away from her so he doesn't jog her memory.  Allllll this and they apply for the same internship.  Jess because she wants to prove she can get on with life and Gray because he needs the money for college.  You see Gray quit the hockey team at school because the kids that tried to rape Jess was allowed to stay on the team.  He gave up a lot.  When Jess proposes that Gray helps her with her “be normal” plan, Gray agrees.  See he’s had a crush on her, but worries what will happen.  Well, Jess’ dreams get worse, and their fake relationship goes well.  So well they both start to fall hard.  But what happens when Jess remembers?  Gray tries to tell her, but she remembers.  This story is SOOOOO Powerful and moving.  You learn a lot about Gray and  Jess in this book.  Anne Elliot did an amazing job bringing a sensitive subject to a sweet sweet story.  I say read it, take a chance I am glad I did!

Because we love music so much, we decided to make a playlist for this book. Hope y'all love it as much as we do!

What's next for David James?

We girls here at Crazy Book Chicks fell in love with David James and his Legend of the Dreamer Series. When I started seeing teasers of his newest novel, to say I was excited was putting it mildly. I hope you are just as interested in the promise of this novel as much as we are. Be sure to sign up for the cover reveal that will be taking place on July 16, 2014!  Make sure to read the interview with David James and check out the amazing teasers!

Hey David, thanks for taking some time away from your busy life to chat with me!
Anytime! Thanks for having me on your blog.
I've noticed you’re working on a YA Contemporary Romance, Between the Stars and Sky... Can you tell me a little about it?
Yah! Between the Stars and Sky is a love story with a dark twist. It’s a story about a boy and a girl, both trying to find where they belong. Except, this is not your ordinary love story. Because as they fall in love (or don’t) they first have to survive a dangerous game called the Firelight Fall.
Point of views make a difference in the way emotions come across, can you tell me what perspective BtSaS is going to be told from?
It’s told from the boy only. Jackson Grant.
Where did the inspiration for this story stem from?
I wanted it to be a story that was about the between of things, and I think that’s something we all can relate to. Being between love, between jobs, between happy and sad. It’s a difficult place to be, but also the place when we have the most freedom to make change and discover who we really are. Those are the things I thought about when writing this book.
Did your writing routine change at all for this novel since it's a different genre?
A little. It was different to write more realistic fiction and not include ANY paranormal aspect at all. I read a lot of contemporary stories and focused more on real life instead of dreams.
Can you share your favorite line from the story or maybe a short teaser?
No teaser just yet! But I will give you one of my favorite lines, a line that’s actually on the cover.
“Find the place where love is infinite.”
I love this line because it shows how all types of love are really different and unique. I’m excited for you to find out which kind of love is in this story!
From personal experience I need music to write anything. When you released Shades of the Stars, you had an impressive playlist, can we expect the same for Between the Stars and Sky?
Of course! It’s a different kind of playlist, and there’s actually a One Direction song on it, but it’s still the same type of music. Because this story isn’t as dark as my first novel, a lot of the songs are lighter.
Can you give us a song that might be on the playlist, maybe a theme song or one that means the most?
Well, since I told you about One Direction, I guess I HAVE TO NOW. Haha. One Direction’s “Summer Love” is a song that is really close to this story.

I like to find the underlining message or meaning when I read, if there was one thing you wanted your readers to take away from this novel, what would it be?
Maybe your first love isn’t the best love for you, but maybe your second love will be. The point being, we never really know. We are all between something. And in that between we can be anything.
I have to say with that, you’ve thoroughly intrigued me and I can’t wait to read this book. Let’s talk covers. All of the covers in The Legend of the Dreamer series are absolutely stunning, I have no doubts this one will be any different, when can we feast our eyes on its beauty?
Soon! I seriously can’t wait to show it to my readers. It is by far the most beautiful cover I have so far, and as soon as I saw it I died a little. Actually, and don’t tell anyone, most days I open the file just to look at it once or twice to make sure it hasn’t changed! It hasn’t. Still awesome.
Is this going to be a standalone or part of a new series?
Between the Stars and Sky is a standalone. The paperback will feature a short story, but the story begins and ends with the novel.
Jackson Grant, I have to say that name holds promise and if he’s any resemblance to the teaser images you have out, I have no doubt I’ll be swooning over him. Can you give us anything about him to tie us over?
I actually based the book a little on The Great Gatsby, so imagine that. Jackson is a guy who has been going through a lot of changes in his life. Big ones. And the idea Is that most of those changes have already come and gone, and at the beginning of this story he is ready to start something new. He’s not stubborn, but he questions everything. And after all he’s been through, he’s wants nothing more than to keep the people he loves close to him.
You mentioned a girl before, can you tell us anything about her?
If Jackson Grant is questioning, Sarah Blake is the girl who just runs and doesn’t think. She’s incredibly brave but not fearless. Sarah is the type of person who has many different layers, and while her outer later may be perfect for Jackson, it’s what’s underneath that really counts in this story.
What about the other characters? Secondary characters are just as important as the MC’s, any of them I need to keep an eye on?
YES! As always. Even though Jackson and Sarah are the main characters of Between the Stars and Sky, there are many others you should look for. There are two characters, Miles and Sean, who are featured in the short story in the paperback of the book. Miles and Sean are almost as much a part of the story as Jackson and Sarah. I think you’ll like Miles a lot. He’s very sarcastic and funny and kind of a troublemaker.
Can you tell us about this game, The Firelight Fall, without revealing too much?
The Firelight Fall is actually a love story. There is a legend attached to the game, about the founding of the town they live in.  Teens play the game to honor the legend, and be a part of it. There is a jump, some fire, and a lot of screaming. But this story, Between the Stars and Sky, is more about uncovering why, exactly, Jackson and Sarah seem to be playing a different kind of game than the others.
Last question, when can we expect to have Between the Stars and Sky in our hands?

By the end of summer. Right when the Firelight Festival is beginning.
Thanks for stopping by David!
