What makes a book amazing? Is it the way its written or how much we can relate to the characters? Each of us would say something different on what rates high on our preference of books, but I think we would all agree on one thing… the way it makes us feel. Am I right? In honesty there’s no right or wrong answer. That’s the beauty we all share in our love of reading. There’s something for each one of us. I feel in love with the way David James writes in his debut novel, Light of the Moon, but I have to say Between the Stars and Sky tops any book I’ve read this year.

David James has this way of making you read between the lines of what he’s saying. It’s almost a riddle that you’re dying to figure out and when you do, it’s a mind blowing, life altering addiction. The feels in this book are hauntingly beautiful. It’s an emotional journey of self-discovery of a boy becoming a man and all the events that change his life.

It’s a story of love.

It’s a story of not giving.

If a one word review were okay I would just tell you, Between the Stars and Sky is BEAUTIFUL , 

and to go buy it! But I want to gush about David James’ new book just a bit more than that. 

This book takes you through the emotions of loss, Jackson’s dealing with it, finding who HE 

is and then finding love. I was BLOWN, BLOWN away at the emotions that I felt in this book. 

Yes there are books that make you cry in parts and laugh in parts, but Between the Stars and 

Sky is different. David James takes you through every emotion possible! I was gutted by parts 

and left with a sweet smile at the end. To me Jackson is not like any other male character you 

read. He feels deeply and David writes his words so poetically that you find yourself saying, “Is 

there someone out there like Jackson?”. If there was they need hug!!! I love LOVED this book. 

It was so different than David James’ Light of the Moon series. It is also a very refreshing love 

and loss story. I say you should go get it now. Don’t wait. Just get it and fall in LOVE with the 

words David James puts to the pages of Between the Stars and Sky.

Hybrids.

If I had to choose one word to sum up all of my problems, this would be it.

Without hybrids, I wouldn’t have to watch my best friend slowly becoming a monster. Without hybrids, I could let go of the mentality “hunt or be hunted.” CHAS wouldn’t be scouring the Earth, intent on slaughtering and using Alex to do it. Without hybrids, I wouldn’t have to be on guard that losing my temper meant losing my shape. There would be no monster inside me, struggling to get out.

Then again, without hybrids, I wouldn’t have Wesley St. John.

BOOK 4 – BLOOD RULE

Forty-six.

That’s how many hybrids survived the Hunter attack in the woods after I revived them with an injection of my blood. That’s how many followed me home to Frederick Falls. And that’s how many were now mentally linked to me through a blood bond.

Two days. Three valium. Fourteen hours of sleep.

That’s what it took to realize I wasn’t losing my mind as a result of the noise in my own head.

Sixteen.

That’s how many days have passed since I almost killed Alex. That’s how many days I’ve sat by his bedside, waiting for him to wake up. To ease the guilt, to understand his betrayal, to remember the exact shade of brown in his eyes.

Zero.

A note from the author: I'm so excited for BETWEEN THE STARS AND SKY to finally be released. This book is... different for me. First, it's a contemporary story. It's real. It could happen. Writing something like that was so different for me I wasn't sure if I could do it. But then I found these characters, and in Jackson and Sarah I found a place where I loved to write. Second, this story. THIS STORY. I didn't think I would get through it. It's one of those stories that is so big and so small and so delicate and so IN YOUR FACE lovely and scary and sad and happy that I wasn't sure I could make it through this book alive. But again, THESE CHARACTERS. I love them. And I love this story. It's a minimalistic story, so there is very little filler. Just words that mean something. To Jackson, the main character, this is important. I took what was important to the characters and reflected that in the way I told the story. This isn't a long story, but it is a big one. Complete with a crazy, scary dare, a secret game. A test of bravery. A love story. Kisses. Betrayals. First loves. Second loves. Diverse loves. All kinds of loves. Life and death. Fear and not. And in the end, I'm not sure if this story wrote me, or I wrote it. I guess you'll find out. :)

 What can I possibly say about Heather Hildenbrand that yall don’t already know? Just when I think she can’t possibly top her latest book, she goes and proves me wrong. The last book I read from Heather was DreamKiller and I absolutely loved that one, if you haven’t read it yet be sure to pick it up and read it. So when I saw the cover and read the synopsis to Imitation, I knew immediately it was going to be an amazing book. I mean afterall look who its by, right?

“Everyone is exactly like me. There is no one like me. I wrestle with these contradicting truths most nights  while the rest of the sleep.”

First three lines of the book had me instantly hooked. Why you ask? Well lets dissect it from my point of view for a moment. Heather writes “Everyone is exactly like me” what could that mean? Well that’s the tricky part right? If everyone is like you they either A) have to be you B) or be the same type of you. Confused? Don’t be it’ll make sense later. “There is no one like me” obviously means the person is unique. No two people are created the same, or are they? Which brings us to the last sentence of the two statements contradicting themselves. How can everyone be the same but not? Got you spinning yet? I can honestly say I loved this. It made me think, it made me curious to see what this character was talking about being the same yet different. But isn't that how we are now? We are all human so that makes us the same but we all have our own traits, our own personalities so that makes us different. Unique. That is unless you’re a twin, then you look the same and may even act the same, but there is always something a small part of you that will make you different. Unique, the contradiction of being the same yet different. Mind blown, definitely! 

Ven is the female MC in imitation. Everything is told from her and lets just say that I don’t envy her at all. I mean Twig City doesn't sound like a place I would love very much, but then living up to what she was created for doesn't sound to appealing either. Well not at first anyways. It starts with a letter from Marla. The letter is like a death sentence, why, well because it means you leave Twig City and never return. Where do you go, what do you do, what exactly are you? It all lies within the title. You’re an imitation. When ‘duty’ calls you have no choice but to comply and that’s what happens to Ven. Duty called but the plus side of her duty detail includes the very handsome body guard Linc. Can I just say that I wouldn't mind being in her shoes so much when hes around.

Secrets. So many secrets. Will Ven gain what she truly wants? Does Ven and Linc become more than what they are? Does Linc find out the biggest secret Ven is keeping from him? And what’s happening to the other like Ven? What’s going to be Ven’s role it all of it and is Linc going to stand by her and help her?

“Joy, bigger than anything I’ve ever experienced, surges into my chest. It is a feeling so solid, it seems touchable. If this is what it’s like to be human… and then I realize—this is what it’s like to be me.”

This book is definitely a series so when you reach the end don’t be surprised, well go ahead and be surprised because well  it’s going to leave you craving the next book. I know I am. I can’t wait to see what happens with Ven and Linc. 

One of the things that truly stuck with me is the fact that for some strange reason, this book almost holds a truth to it. The extreme possibility that this could very well be going on right now and we don’t even know it makes it that much more intriguing. Heather Hildenbrand, you definitely have out done yourself once again. I cannot wait for the next book to this amazing series and I’m absolutely in love with Linc. He’s truly amazing. 

What would it feel like to be a copy of someone, to have your life's purpose only to be that. When you are done you are disposed of. That's what it feels like to be an imitation, which is what Ven is.  Ven is called up to fulfill her purpose in the world.  She is needed to step In place.  She's never been outside in the real world, learned manners, nice clothes or ridden in cars.  When she arrives at her new home she's greeted by her "father". Wow what a jerk Titus Rogen is.  Seriously Heather Hildenbrand made a character I hate. He's one mean dude!! Bring in Linc, Ven or uhhh Raven's bodyguard. Right away I could tell Linc liked her, but really didn't care for the real Raven.
Ven's job was to go charity events and play the part of Raven, and help find who was trying to kill the real Raven.  Titus didn't care if she died... That's what she was for. Sigh. Along the way Linc notices she's not really Raven.... But she keeps up the lie. She starts to fall for him but doesn't think an imitation can. Through all this , Ven finds there is a plot to take her, kill her, and the know she's an imitation. Who's behind it? And who also are imitations put in place?  There is also some imitations on the outside who want to break out in their own and have removed their tracking devices. What does this mean for Ven? Can she have that life??
I must say this book blew me away. I loved the mystery around every turn. I was kept on my toes the entire time. I absolutely loved Linc! Seriously go out and get Imitation, Heather Hildenbrand created a story that brings you in and captivates your mind! I can't wait for book 2  like now!

Finding Dad and Sophie’s graves, I shift back to my human form and slip the elastic belt loose to release my shorts. I put them on and walk between the stones to sit right in front of Dad’s headstone. Seeing his name, Curtis James Williams, I nearly lose myself. I break my stillness by wiping away some dirt from the face of the stone.

“Hey, Dad,” I whisper. Taking a seat in the grass, I begin pulling weeds, my usual routine. “Things have been…well, pretty insane.”

I think back over the last few weeks since the last time I visited. Between finals in school, working out, pack duties, learning things of this world that I never knew possible, fighting and not fighting with Skeeter, things have been intense and nonstop crazy.

“Football will start in August. I don’t think I’m doing the playbook boot camp again this year. I know it’s important, but I’ve got a lot on my plate now. I won’t give up football,” I promise my dad.

With a hard swallow, I decide to move into updating him on the family. “Mom is trying to be Mom,” I say, yanking a weed from in front of his headstone. “She’s okay, I think. I know it’s harder on her than she lets on, but she’s trying to live for us, which is more than she did a few months ago. She has days where the tears just won’t stop, but they’re not as constant now. She seems angrier than usual.” I wince as memories zoom around me. Mom got angry at me for throwing my wet towel in the hamper, ripped into Leland over a brand of peanut butter he bought, and has been suspicious of Jaz and Seth for no reason. I’d rather not rehash all that again, so I continue on with the family updates.

“Alex is talking more. Sometimes we can understand him. He just started calling me Heywe the other day,” I say proudly. Alex is Leland’s son and is a little over a year old. He only says “dada” and “Heywe.” Mom and Jaz were a bit upset about that and are still trying to teach him new words.

“He’s getting a lot better with walking, too. He’s not tottering as much and doesn’t need help all the time. Mom fusses when he falls down, but I know she’s enjoying watching him walk and try to reach different milestones. Leland had to baby proof the living room and kitchen, too, because Alex thought his gold fish crackers belonged in the VCR and DVD player. That was a mess. Leland just tossed it after attempting to shake out all the crackers.” I snort.

I don’t tell him about the time Alex put his teddy in the cabinet next to the oven. None of us could find it and he had no way of letting us know where it was, even if he could remember. I can laugh now, but that was a rough two days. He screamed almost non-stop for that thing. Jazzy finally found it when she went to make waffles, and he conked out as soon as he got his little hands on it. Dad had picked out that teddy bear just for Alex the day Psycho Sammy, Leland’s ex, dropped him off, calling him freak spawn. That teddy is Alex’s best friend now.

I grab a few more weeds and pile them off to the side. It’s not many, and the landscapers usually get them all, but they don’t come out often.

REVIEWS : 

Soul Promise is book 2 in Rachel Walter’s soul mate series.  If you haven’t read True Connection yet, start there.  I was excited to see Henry get his story and he does in this book, and much more.  Henry is trying to figure out himself and his wolf and what he is to others.  All this and fighting the pull he has for Skeeter.  Now, I want to slap them BOTH in this book.  It was like QUIT FIGHTING IT.  But they are also fighting against a force that wants to tear their group apart.  Jazzy, Seth, and Barry are all there to help Henry through his tough time, even when he pushes them away.  There are so many characters in this book, but I am weird I like my core group and what they are into.  Henry had so much going against him, even himself.  But he figured out that he should count on his friends to be there to help him through anything. There is a battle, I wont tell you about it but……. friends are lost.  I cried. Get your tissues ready.  I will say this is a VERY heavy book.  Not just in size, but in emotion.  Rachel does leave it open for all the characters to get something in the next book.  Me?  I want a Barry book.  Then I will be thrilled. HAHAHA.  Go Fall in love with all these friends.  You feel like part of their lives by the time you are through. 

One of the perks of being friends with an author is you generally get teasers from the story before its finished. You also get to beta read for them too, which is AWESOME. I knew before I read Soul Promise that it was going to be deep and emotional, I wasn’t wrong, but it also had a comedic relief that balanced everything. That’s what I love most about this book, this series, and this author. Rachel Walter writes in a way that can have you laughing one minute, crying the next, and back to laughing again. It’s truly amazing.

Soul Promise is told from Henry’s POV, if you’ve read True Connection, you’ll know that Henry is Jazzy’s brother. I definitely recommend you reading it first because it gives back ground information on the world the author has created. You could probably get away with just reading Soul Promise, but you won’t grasps the significance of certain events fully. With that being said, I hate spoilers, so if you haven’t read TC I would stop reading this review.

So Henry is this amazing character who cares deeply about everyone in his life, when Jazzy was threatened in TC, he found out he wasn’t a normal human. His biological father was a shifter, not to mention a murder as well, but that left Henry’s wolf side unknown until his family was in danger. After his first shift he began receiving messages that only he could hear… he thought it was his human half fighting with his wolf. Nothing is that easy, but it represents something we all go through in our life. It’s figuring out who we are when something significant happens. Something so life altering that you find two pieces of yourself at odds with the other. The old you fighting with the new you, who wins? Is there ever really a winner?

Then he’s confused about Delilah… you know Skeeter, Jazzy’s best friend? Well he’s feeling things that he can’t express, on top of everything else that’s going on, he begins to pull away. It hurts everyone. Rachel writes in a way that has you pulling similarities in your own life, well at least for me it does. Think back on your life, on friends and family…did you ever have that one person that held the group together? Well that’s Henry in a way, but Rachel has a better way of saying it.

So what happens? More than I can say, but know this book had me on the edge of my seat. It takes a little while to pick up momentum but once it does, you’ll be saying WTH just happened. It had me laughing throughout the entire book. The love and bonds between the characters are uniquely refreshing, Henry and Barry’s interaction’s are hilarious. But with the happy comes the sad. There are a few chapters that had me in tears. I have to say I wasn’t real happy with a few scenes that took place, and though I knew about them before reading them, it still punched me in the gut.

What it all comes down to is that Henry finds his soul mate with Skeeter, and its through their bond that he’s able to make it through some pretty tough spots. There’s so much packed into this series that I can’t wait to see what the author comes up with next. The paranormal aspects are top notch, not to mention the variations of shifters, and characters that beg you for each one of them to have their own story, you won’t be disappointed. If you love YA and the Paranormal, The Soul Mate Series by Rachel Walter is definitely for you.
